WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Labor and other federal agencies will host three town hall meetings in Arizona to provide former, retired and current nuclear weapons workers and their survivors with information about benefits available through the Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program Act and other federal programs.
The meetings will be in Flagstaff on June 7-8 and in Tuba City on June 9. Federal representatives will be available to assist eligible applicants in filing their claim for compensation, and provide status of existing claims. The EEOICPA provides compensation and medical benefits to employees, including contractors and subcontractors, whose work in the nuclear weapons industry made them ill. Survivors of qualified workers may also be entitled to benefits. A searchable list of the covered facilities located across the country is available here.
“Many former, retired and current nuclear weapons workers who live in Arizona or relocated there may be eligible for benefits in these programs, but they haven’t filed a claim. Our goal is to not only inform these workers or their survivors about the program, but also assist them with filing a claim to obtain compensation,” said Malcolm Nelson, ombudsman for the Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program.
At each meeting, representatives from the Office of the Ombudsman for EEOICP will present information and host a question-and-answer session for attendees. Representatives from DEEOIC’s Denver and Seattle District Offices and the Espanola and Las Vegas Resource Centers will also be available to help individuals file new claims and provide claimants with status updates on their existing claims. The information presented at each meeting will be the same.
These meetings will also include a discussion of the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act as it relates to EEOICPA. Representatives from the U.S. Department of Justice will be at each meeting to discuss the program and benefits available for eligible uranium miners, millers and ore transporters covered under RECA.
